How to Revive a Bee
Found a tired bee that will not move? Here is exactly what to do, step by step, to help it back on its feet.
- Check the bee is not just resting. Watch it for 5 to 10 minutes first.
- Move it away from danger like ants, paths and puddles.
- If flowers are nearby, gently move the bee to a bloom.
- If there are no flowers, offer a tiny drop of sugar water or bee revival syrup on a clean surface.
- Give it space and time. Do not hover or prod.
How to Tell If a Bee Needs Help
Many people find a bee and think it is dying. Often it is not. A short watch tells you a lot.
Signs a bee is just resting: it sits still but looks warm, it moves slowly, and the day is cold or early. Signs it needs help: it is still struggling after 10 to 15 minutes, it is wet after heavy rain and cannot fly, or it is stuck on a windowsill or pavement with no flowers near.
Bees cannot fly below 12°C. On cold UK days, warmth often helps before sugar. Bumblebee queens may rest for 30 to 45 minutes and then fly off with no help at all. Watch first. Step in last.
Step 1: Move the Bee to Safety
Get the bee away from danger first. Ants, traffic, rain and puddles are all risks.
Use a leaf or a piece of card to lift it. Do not force it with your fingers. If there is a flower within reach, move the bee to the bloom and give it time. Nectar from a real flower is better than sugar water, so a flower always comes first.
How to Make Sugar Water to Revive a Bee
If there are no flowers, sugar water can give a tired bee the lift it needs.
The RSPB recommends two tablespoons of white granulated sugar to one tablespoon of water. Use slightly warm water to help it dissolve. Keep the mix thick and do not water it down.
Put a small drop on a flat surface like a spoon, a saucer or a clean leaf, near the head of the bee. Do not drown it. One small drop is enough. Give the bee 5 to 10 minutes to drink and recover.
| Do | Don’t |
|---|---|
| Use white granulated sugar only | Use honey, which can carry disease |
| Use plain water, slightly warm | Use brown sugar, demerara or sweeteners |
| Offer a small drop only | Leave sugar water out for bees to find later |
| Give the bee time and space | Try to force the bee to drink |
| Wash your hands after | Use flavoured or fizzy drinks |

What If the Bee Doesn't Recover?
Not every bee can be saved. Old, injured or unwell bees may not come back.
If it has not moved after 30 minutes despite syrup, it may be near the end of its life. Check for varroa mites, which look like small reddish-brown dots on the body. There is nothing you can do for a bee with mites.
If the bee looks healthy but still will not fly, move it to a warm, sheltered spot with flowers nearby and leave it be.
The Easier Option: A Bee Revival Kit
Sugar water works at home. The trouble is you are rarely at home when you find a tired bee.
A bee revival kit is the portable answer. The syrup sits ready on your keys, with no mixing and nothing to spill. Reach for it in towns, car parks, parks, pavements and on country walks. Keep it going with a kit refill.
| Sugar water | Bee revival kit |
|---|---|
| Only practical at home | Always with you |
| Must be mixed fresh | Pre-filled and ready |
| Easy to spill from a spoon | Controlled drop from a vial |
| Free | Small one-off cost |
| No expiry concerns | Refresh syrup every 12 months |
Why Do Bees Get Tired?
Bees are high-energy insects. They can beat their wings 200 times a second and fly up to 5 miles from the hive to find food.
In towns, green spaces and flowers are spread thin. Bees fly further with fewer places to stop. They can overheat, get soaked in rain or run out of fuel mid-journey.
Cold weather makes it worse. Below 12°C, bees cannot fly at all. Pesticides and lost habitat add to the strain. Planting helps, so see the best plants for bees in the UK.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give a bee honey to revive it?
No. Never offer honey to a bee. Honey can carry pathogens, including spores linked to American Foulbrood, a serious disease that can wipe out a hive. Stick to white granulated sugar and water. Read more on why you should never give bees honey.
What is the right ratio of sugar to water for bees?
The RSPB recommends two tablespoons of white granulated sugar to one tablespoon of slightly warm water. Keep the mix thick and do not add extra water.
How long does it take to revive a bee?
If the bee needs only an energy boost, it should start drinking within a few minutes and be ready to fly within 10 to 20 minutes. If there is no change after 30 minutes, the bee may not recover.
Should I leave sugar water out for bees in my garden?
No. Sugar water is for emergencies only. Leaving it out can stop bees foraging for nectar and may draw in other insects. Plant bee-friendly flowers for a lasting, healthy food source.
Can I pick up a bee with my hands?
It is safer to use a piece of card or a leaf. Bees rarely sting unprovoked, but holding one in a cupped hand raises the chance of an accidental sting.
What if the bee has tiny red dots on it?
Those are likely varroa mites, a serious parasite. There is nothing you can do for a bee with mites. Do not bring it inside, as mites can spread to other insects.
