What to Feed a Dying Bee

You have found a bee that looks like it is dying. The safest food is white granulated sugar mixed with water, or the syrup from a bee revival kit. One drop near its head can give it the energy to fly again.

What to feed a bee

White granulated sugar and warm water is the go-to. The RSPB ratio is two parts sugar to one part water. For the full method, see how to make sugar water for bees. Bee revival syrup does the same job and comes ready to use.

What not to feed a bee

Some foods do more harm than good. Keep well clear of these.

  • Honey can carry American Foulbrood, a disease that devastates hives. Find out the answer to can you give bees honey.
  • Brown sugar and demerara are harder for bees to process.
  • Sweeteners and artificial sugars are toxic to bees.
  • Flavoured drinks, juice, and cordial are too acidic and have the wrong sugars.
  • Hot water can burn a bee. Use warm water only.
  • Tap water on its own has no energy value.

Is it dying or just tired?

Most bees on the ground are tired, not dying. A tired bee sits still and low but can still move its legs and tongue. Give it ten minutes and watch. A drop of sugar water often brings it back. For the full signs to look for, read how to revive a bee.

When nothing works

Some bees are at the end of their lives, and no food will help. If there is no change after a long rest and a feed, move the bee to a safe, sheltered spot off the ground. Let nature take its course.

Be ready next time

Sugar water works at home, but tired bees turn up on walks, by the shops, and in the park. The revival kit keeps bee-safe syrup on your keys, so you always have the right food to hand.
